Lip Gloss #4: Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment

This is kind of a quick and dirty review of Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment, because that’s what this “lipgloss” is: a secret beauty weapon that you keep tucked in a drawer, not displayed on your desk or in a designer bag. It’s the trick up your sleeve that makes all your other lip glosses look as gorgeous as they do.

Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment: $1.99-$2.99

The Blistex site says that “Blistex Lip Ointment’s Advanced Moisture System delivers penetrating medication in a unique formula to relieve cold sores and severe lip dryness.” Truly ahead of their time, or at least their competitors, Blistex also notes that:

“Beauty professionals also routinely use Blistex Lip Ointment to return a smooth texture to lips before applying lip color. When using as a lipstick base, apply liberally and leave on lips for five minutes. Then remove excess with a tissue before applying color.”

Coincidently, that’s exactly what I was going to recommend!

Best lip soother, saver and softener around

This lip “gloss” (it’s really ointment and too liquidy to be a gloss) delivers seriously intense moisture, and fast. I almost wish I took a picture of my lips before using it, but I’m not sure I’d want that scaly snapshot on the web. Suffice to say, I was peely and cracked and one coat of Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment smoothed everything over.

There’s a slight tingle to this salve, but no taste, so it’s great for layering. It does have a slightly white sheen however, so use sparingly or plan to slick a color on top. In this cold Boston weather, it’s the perfect base; right now, when most days barely reach freezing, I put it on every night before bed and whenever I’m just sitting around the house.

Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment is the perfect preventative and restorative lip treatment, as well as a protective lip primer or base coat.

It doesn’t come in the prettiest package, but this hyper-hydrating lip saver isn’t destined for your purse. It’s best used at home, to help repair, restore and prepare your lips to look fabulous out on the town. Think of this $2 bargain beauty find as our little secret.
