Lip Gloss #3: ChapStick True Shimmer in Botanical Berry
I’ve never been a Blistex or ChapStick kind of girl, but this blog is forcing me outside my comfort zone, in
the name of research. So when I realized I kept coming across ads for ChapStick’s new True Shimmer lip balm, I felt I had to try it. More of an impulse buy than the investment some lip gloss brands demand, ChapStick True Shimmer lip balm will only set you back about $3, the average price for a decent drugstore lip moisturizer these days.
ChapStick promises that the True Shimmer lip balms will deliver “noticeable lips with a subtle shine [with] creamy, moisturizing ingredients.” All in all, I’d have to agree with them, except I’d argue it’s more sparkle than shine. However, at this bargain price, I’m happy with what I got.
ChapStick True Shimmer Lip Balm: Botanical Berry $2.99
Adds subtle sparkle that shimmers, not glitters.
This lip balm is actually very aptly named. I think the camera adds some sparkle, but the real life look is
not glittery, just a tad iridescent and a step up from plain, boring ChapStick. I wouldn’t say it shines like a gloss, but you can tell you took the effort to put something on.
Moisturizes as only an old school lip balm brand can.
The bottom line here is that this is a new flavor from ChapStick, and as such is not going to replace your fancy $20 lip tubes. However, they kind of invented moisturizing lip protection and are a favorite among athletes, so there’s a lot to be said for ChapStick moisturizing technology, and it definitely delivers in the True Shimmer lip balm.
Smells good, but doesn’t taste like much.
My issue with ChapStick has always been that it wasn’t particularly fun, which translates to flavor and smell most of the time. They solved half of the problem here; Botanical Berry smells great, much
better than the fake Cherry of most ChapSticks. But it still doesn’t have any flavor, which was disappointing.
My overall review is that with ChapStick True Shimmer, you get what you pay for. But that’s not always a bad thing. In this instance, it’s ChapStick that’s been jazzed up a little bit, and priced accordingly. So, if you’re a ChapStick fan or low-maintenance lip care girl, this is the perfect product for you. Or, if you love layering on lip gloss but need a nice basecoat, this shimmery lip balm will add a nice touch and extra dimension of shine to your favorite lip gloss.
