Lip Gloss #2: L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lip Gloss in Bloom

If you watch any sort of girl-oriented television, you’ve probably seen Beyonce Knowles hawking L’Oreal’s new line of Infallible lipstick and lip gloss. Never one to shy away from letting advertising influence me, I decided to test out how “infallible” L’Oreal’s new lip color line really was. Now I’m debating testing CVS’s liberal cosmetics return policy and trying to get my $10 back.

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lip Gloss: Bloom $9.99

L’Oreal’s website (which, for the record, is horribly annoying and bad, in this semi-geek’s opinion) says that the Infallible lip color collection is…

…the first long-wearing lipcolour that will not disappoint. The Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour’s patented formula offers superior elasticity for 16 hours of beautiful, comfortable color that won’t flake off or wear out mid-lip.

I went for the Infallible lip gloss as opposed to the lipstick because I’m more comfortable with gloss; it seems like there’s less of a chance of something going wrong. My shade, #125 or “Bloom,” is a nice medium pink shimmer lip gloss with microscopic glittery flakes. At least in the tube.

More sticky than shiny.

On, you get a nice shiny lip gloss for the first few minutes, but it quickly goes flat and feels sticky and messy. The lip “mirror” on top is a highly polished silver plastic that warps the reflection, making it useless for applying any type of lip color. Which leads to my next criticism, and the reason I usually go for lip gloss, as opposed to lipstick or lip stain: I don’t like having to apply with a mirror.

Too pigmenty to be a lip gloss, too goopy to be a lipstick.

The color, which is much lighter on than it seems like it should be, has too much color and a strangely angled sponge applicator. Thus, it requires a mirror to apply every time, making is impractical for on-the-go wear. Which might be okay if it actually lasted 16 hours, or even 6, but…

Neither lasts on and on, nor stays put.

As I said, the lip gloss fades and feels sticky after just a few minutes, making it far from long-lasting. But it also smudges and come off on anything your lips come in contact with; so, no kissing, eating or drinking. And while the label never explicitly says the lip gloss won’t rub off, just that it won’t come off, with a name like Infallible I expected lip color that would last past a few sips of water.

On top of all that, the Infallible gloss also failed the ultimate test; I needed to layer lip balm underneath. Didn’t help that is has no flavor. Not that it tastes bad, like lipstick, but it’s kind of like wearing watered down unscented glue. Complete fail as a moisturizing lip gloss; I think the flat look may have appeared once the lip balm underneath wore off.

All that said, it could have been worse, but I would have much rather bought a couple lattes with my money. I wouldn’t recommend the Infallible lip gloss by any means, but it’s not the worst lip gloss I’ve encountered.

No kisses for L’Oreal’s Infallible lip gloss
